Used to see these all over what at the time was then 'Network SouthEast'. Usually found along sidings or at depots, they allow one column to supply lighting to 2 'roads' or sidings. You are correct, they used to support far older lanterns. There are a few examples remaining (with their original lanterns on) along the Waterloo to Woking section of railway.

Thanks for the info - that explanation makes sense, that's what I thought they might be for. Do you have any photos of the older lanterns? I'd be curious to see what they look like.

Pretty sure I took some years ago... No idea where to look for them tho. I'll try and remember to take some more next time I go up to London on the train

Very interesting
, the winch bit above the fittings reminds me of the shovel flood mounts

Alas, went up to London on the train today, only to find the ones I was thinking of have been replaced. Seem to recall they had a GEC top entry lantern of some sort on, which I guess would make sense - doesn't matter which way the lantern winches up into that mechanism if the lamp is cap up.

Grrrr... Coming back, discovered there are still some elsewhere. They are indeed a GEC top entry lantern with a refractor bowl. Didn't have phone out in time to get a picture...
