I'd second that, awesome photo! I did something similar with an 18w SOX on a 6w fluorescent battery lantern inverter.

They look good when ran on low power HV DC. You get a positive column from the anode ionising the mercury vapour but at the cathode end where the electrons are more energetic the neon gas gets excited instead and you get a big orange glow! You can also see the Faraday dark space between the two discharge glows.
