Thorn Beta 5's and unusual brackets
Last Thursday I had labelled 2 columns of which resided two elderly Mk15 Beta 5 lanterns on extremely unusual brackets, expecting removal soon after. On the 6'th April at about 12:30, I had a phone call from the chap who had removed them, saying they've been placed by the gate at the top of my garden. I then had to phone dad to ask him to bring them into the garden. With the removal of these, and the loss of the Beta 2 I wanted, this now wipes clean my area of lighting of interest to me (well council owned at least) and finally brings a close to this very unusual installation 11 years after the rest fell.

Opening both up finally solved for me why they switched on way earlier than the other lights, the cells are rated at 100 lux, their odd position on the side probably didn't help matters at all. sadly the one minicell had been replaced for a part nighter, but I had a very similar 70 lux all night cell I roped in to return the lantern to a more original state.

I am absolutely over the moon to finally have these safely in the collection. I had kept a very close eye on these for years now, having holding very fond memories to these. It made it an absolute must that I done everything I could to save them when the time came for removal. I'm glad my patience paid off. Replacement lanterns are Holophane S-Line lanterns mounted post top... How boring.

The Beta 5s are another one of my favourites. That's nice of the man to phone you up! Did you put your details on the column?

Wonder why they screwed top entry’s on with the lamp holder at the front?

Lots of emotions went over it but now its not going anywhere anymore. I think its a great acquisition

I would love get beta 5 but I do have a Sox 55er (American Beta 2) it can run 35 watt lamps as well.

wonder why they drilled the cell on the side? never seen that method before, may be less likely to leak water than way, fitting of minicells to sox lanterns was a shit idea all round, most were not tightend up properly and just let the rain in which ruined the lanterns eventually

Thats the reason I wanted these, I've never seen a minicell drilled on the side anywhere else in the country. Believe me, fitted with 100 lux cells these switch very early too.
