Thorn Johanna 1 and Ansell bollard lit
I had a bit of spare time today so thought may as well get the Thorn Johanna 1 mounted on my mini column and get it powered up. I honestly could never tire of seeing this lantern working, its a crazy contraption but looks so clean and stylish. I actually prefer the mercury lamp over a SON in this, it brings out the clean modern lines brilliantly. (Bollard pictured lit as a small bonus)

I think the Thorn lantern wouldn't look out of place even in a modern installation.

not it would not look out of place, it looks quite modern. its quite a recent design? is the ansell bollard son? i am sure i have seen these thorn johanna's outside the macdonalds in elgin but maybe wrong its a failry new building

Yeah it’s very modern looking so wouldn’t look out of place in a modern installation. These are late 90s early 2000s aren’t they?

A really classic lantern from Thorn’s Scandinavian division. The only thing I never liked about these was the red colour filter ring, which may be fine with SON or CMH but really clashes with the output of mercury or cool white MH. If they had made a version with a blue or greenish filter it would have fitted better! Since you have one, can you see if it’s possible to change this?

Do they also have any kind of internal reflector to more efficiently direct the light from the lamp upwards?

Unfortunately the red band can't be changed very easily, it would involve a lot of careful sanding so you don't damage the area outside of the band. No reflector either, since its a simple screwglass of sorts its difficult to get a reflector inside.

I’ve seen some in use that don’t feature that red band at all. I’ll re-upload said pic so you can have a look. I've also seen them with different styles of louvres, there is a pic of some I saw in Iceland in my "out & about" gallery.

Found somebody selling a complete NOS base less canopy on eBay. Link added to the forum.

There were two types of louvres made for these, Johanna 1 and Johanna 2 respectively.

Yes a MV bulb suits this a LOT better no doubt about that
