Thorn Beta 5 on an iron column!
Stumbled upon this wonderful installation today by complete coincidence, me and my cousin happen to have stopped by this bank! This is a Thorn Beta 5 on what appears to be an iron column of some description. I’m guessing the column dates from post-war times and would’ve previously supported an MBF lantern? Sadly, the lantern is missing its bowl and the gear tray has rusted severely! It’s likely that this lantern hasn’t operated in decades.

Looks like that lost it's bowl LONG ago from the state of the gear tray! Wonder if it still works?

Indeed! According to street view, the bowl was still missing in 2008 so it’s likely hasn’t had its bowl for decades. This is one of the older Thorn Beta 5s as this dates from 1964 judging by the sticker in the lantern! Sadly, it’s unlikely this still works as there’s already another column in front of it. I’m surprised this column wasn’t removed though!

Probably works when powered these were bullet proof.
