Yep it's ok to run the 36W PL on switch start very odd the ballast needed to be replaced Dave

It was the same in the other lantern that was rescued with this.

Looks like a Philips SOX choke!

Its a proper 36/40w fluorescent choke. I would've though 35w SOX would slightly under run it?

So both chokes had failed? That's bloody bizarre! We used to use this exact set up in county hall with their "listed 500x500mm suspended ceiling grid" all were specially made Fitzgerald fittings thousands of them none had ever failed!

Apparently so. The ballast here is dated 2000 and the lantern dates to 1996.
