Internally Illuminated Sign
Saved the other night after it was replaced on the A30. This is all original although the chokes appear to be 20w from new. The 15w lamps i fitted in 11/15 are doing fine and have been running 24/7. Looks to date from c1974 when the road was constructed

Good save that! I've not seen one of these old fibreglass signs for years.

Have always loved the internally lit signs!

Oh, I remember these, along with the old fibreglass traffic island bollards using twin 13watt T5s Cool

This is just awesome love the way it's that old even the SB starters are dated 11/95! Surprised must be a good 1970s sign and those old ballasts look original! 💪🏿

When you think about it - that's been lit 24/7 (apart from failed lamps) for 43 years!!! That's quite amazing really.... Find me ANYTHING LED (save for a power indication LED maybe) that will manage that, or for that matter, 43 months....

You will be lucky to get 10 years out of an LED LUA. The LEDs and drivers are impossible to replace so the whole unit has to be binned. In 10 years, a fluorescent sign light may only go through 3 sets tubes or less if you use really good tubes.

10 years, that's being a bit optimistic! Round here, they seem to go faulty in no time, there are loads under a year old, all strobing away. They all replaced perfectly working fluorescent ones too!

What trays are they using? The ones here are these. They don't seem to be too bad so far but I don't think they will last more than 10 years, especially the ones with no photocell. I can be sure that we won't be seeing them still working after 20 years!

Mix of those (on complete replacements) and a retrofit tray on others. Both seem crap.

Yeah, even the proper Simmonsigns ones looks crap. Entire thing made of plastic compared to the old fluorescent ones that are aluminium. They glare more than the fluorescent ones too. I've got a picture of a fluorescent one vs LED in the gallery and the LED one puts out so much more glare.
