Queensway road tunnel
The Queensway road tunnel, which opened in 1934 and is known locally as the Birkenhead tunnel, has been lit by these fluorescent fittings for as long as I can remember.
But for how long remains to be seen...

Taken through a dirty windscreen with silly-high ISO set :(

Was there any off? They looks very well maintained.

There are A few lamps in each unit and each seemed to have one or two out but I’m not sure if that’s failed lamps or by design. Tunnel lighting is actually quite complicated.

I pass through the tunnels on my way to work and there is usually only one of the two lamps in each unit lit. I believe that they switch them regularly to even out the wear. Some times you see both lit and then one set will switch off.

It also depends on the ambient outside lighting levels, especially in the tunnel portals where they have more or less lighting on so your eyes respond in a safe manner to the change. I miss going through the tunnels lol. I used to work in Birkenhead for years and then later on in Bromborough.

Yeah I remember you saying it was on Price Street just up the road from where I was working at the time. We've moved to what was the main post office on Argyle street in 2005. There's some interesting old pics of the tunnel with the old lighting recessed into the side walls and with traffic lights at the dock branch. Also the enormous ventilation fans and an old control panel which is long out of service. Old cars used to smoke alot more than they do now and break down alot more!

I'm in Speke by the airport now lol. The industrial park is nice but the housing estate nearby is a proper dive lol. There is a vid on my youtube channel of the big fans ect, the tour is recommended tbh.
