I think being Dimmable could shorten the lamps life. going back some years I had 30w strip lamps for under cabinet lighting on a dimmer and it shortened their life considerably I think it is due to the length of the filament. They would sing/hum when dimmed so I removed the dimmer all OK after!

@Simon, that could well be the case, I have ran pygmy lamps on dimmers in the past and noticed the filament dancing slighty.

Probably the caused by the triac dimmers, I guess you would still see an increase in life if just using plain voltage reduction to dim it (through a variac or similar).
