Ah you got this, good to see it when to a good home Nice old gear but be careful of that cap, the asbestos won't be the only carcinogenic thing in the lantern if that goes off and spills its PCB's everywhere!
I don't suppose the cap has any date markings on it to give an idea of the production year of the lantern?

Yes, I sent the selelr an offer. Still a lot more than what I'd normally pay for a lantern, but I think for something this rare it's worth it! I haven't had time to strip it down and check for date codes yet. Once I do (and have more masks) I will do so and remove the asbestos as it looks very flaky! The cap seems in decent condition, giving a 0.89 power factor on my energy monitor. I'll give it a careful look over once I do the detail strip down.

Sometimes even if it is a lot it can be worth it to get a rare one! Good the cap works but just be careful with it, they do have a habit of looking and testing fine and then suddenly going into meltdown and exploding (sometimes even after having been run for several 10s of hours and seeming fine!), blasting PCB's out over everything! If I were you I'd leave it in place (assuming it isn't leaking) and just disconnect it running the lantern as LPF.

Seconded about the cap. Those old caps are not self healing, they will keep their full capacity right up until the second they fail from insulation breakdown
