Fitted in waterproof single 1960's Thorlux fitting, top quality fittings are these, one of my all time favorites, galv spine and powder coated, these never rust

So these are an external fitting then?

I have seen these about

What's the gear in them?
lampy   [25 Aug, 2015 at 12:38 AM]
yes, so long as you seal the cable entry, completely water tight, this version grips the tube itself with rubber compression rings, its gasketed down the middle of the spine, rubber end caps, the gear is branded thorlux but 100% identical to a atlantic 3 ballast, these were part of BLI in the 60's

Unusual design of fitting! Saw a handful at the weekend round the back of a hotel. Only one had its tube intact though!

These are excellent quality fittings, you just wont beat the build quality on these, its the fact they are built like tanks, and dont ever rust. Food factories, breweries and coal mines used a lot of these, they had a gold thorlux sticker on one side in the middle of the fitting

What were these originally used for?, or are these pre-weather packs?
