Had this years, it was salvaged from a military Kitchen block which was full of them, this has the same trough as those early ones with the ballast ontop of the spine, i believe these date from around 1956.57

the spines rusty, but the trough cleaned up like new, you have to push one end of the tube a long way though one of the holes and then back on itself though the other hole, you then have to above the trough to put both loose BC holder on, so yes its fiddlyes

It has certainly cleaned up well, very stylish too, for the 50s.

yes its opal plastic and very shiny, they clean up like new unless they have become scratched
