Burgess Safari 8w Mains/battery lantern Now this is not one of your average battery lanterns. There are no electronics inside. It can operate direct from the mains or from two 69v batteries which have long been obsolete, and were pricey when available, which is partly why they were not successful. On mains it runs on a magnetic ballast and on battery is it uses a resistive ballast. These are quite rare in the UK but fairly common in the US.

It is heavy yes, even without any batteries which I will never own. It gives a good bright light though on mains, this has had some practical use for some DIY. Very Happy

Awesome. Sad you'll never be able to get the batteries to complete it though. What brand is the tube??

Yeah, I know someone on LG wired lots of AA cells together to make 69v. I'm not going to bother though as it can operate from the mains. It has an American GE tube.

Well I be blown! Just looked online and they were old eveready batteries and were like a card board box type! Very old! Good find

Yes, it's a real quality lantern. They came out in the 60s and were manufactured up until the mid 70s. It's easy to see it as just another battery lantern!

Reading online those batteries are still available at special order! I know BBL make cells to order!
