New fluorescent gear tray for Beta 5 MK12
Here I have converted a 2008 MK12 Thorn Beta 5 from SOX to 2x8w Fluorescent. I made a new gear tray and kept the SOX gear tray intact so it could be very easily converted back to SOX one day with little trouble. This replaces the 18w SOX Philips XWC that has become troublesome this last 8 months. It currently has a couple of well used 8w Sylvania tubes from the late 80s/early 90s as I didn't want to use any of my really old tubes. Of course I would never do this to an older Beta 5!

reminds me of the GEC 2x2 foot 40w lanterns that were once common sight on railways.. neat little conversion job there

Thanks! I remember the British rail lanterns well, think they were GEC and had warm white tubes which seemed to be the standard for BR in the 70s & 80s.

Cool conversion and well executed! I wonder if you would have space to make this a more powerful 4X8W a bit like a mini version of the famous 4X80W BC lanterns

You would easy get 4 in a triangle configuration on this wide gear tray.

It would be possible to have 4 x 8w though would almost certainly need to use 2 series ballasts rather than 4 ballasts as space would be severely limited!
