Rustic Crustic 18 inch fitting Got this off of ebay. There were 2 but one of the tubes smashed which is a funny story for later on. I've cleaned it heavily but it was filthy! Whoever owned it has worse lungs than I could ever dream of! The inside of it had dead cockroaches in it! I didn't even know you could get cockroaches in this country! That tube has seen better days, about as bright an LED replacement at this point.

By the time i'm done with that there'll be no original fitting left Razz It'll probably be a heavy sand and hammerite job. The ballast's in good nick. Little sylvania thing. With the heat that thing runs at i'm shocked it still works! Why is it the smaller a ballast is the more hot it gets?

The original paint looks fine, just strip all the lego and give the lantern a clean with sodium hypochlorite based degreaser (oven cleaner) + wd40 to remove the glue remains from the labels/tape

The lego you can dip in degreaser too, but beware that if it had micro cracks in the plastic to begin with, it might disintegrate to pieces

PS the stuff deletes any paint etches like the etch on the ballast

I'll be stripping the fitting before cleaning it. I'm worried cleaning it will take the paint off as some of it's really caked on and i'm very heavy handed. If any does get stripped off I can just hammerite the bad bits.

Oven cleaners dont take off the original paint. Don't scrape it, it dissolves the dirt and then comes off with just a wipe

I've had a few heavily nicotine stained fittings now. Strip out all the electrickery bits and wash in the sink/bath with washing up liquid, leave it to soak for 10 minutes or so too. This has worked fine for all mine so far, and is gentle on the paint. Use a cotton rag or sponge, not a Brillo pad!
