It's crazy how people get ripped off for these, In a garden centre or proper fish supply shop, you'd be charged Â£20 for one lamp when you can get them for like Â£4 each from a lighting wholesaler...

Scary things them! Apparently people have been buying them because they're dirt cheap and sticking them in normal fittings thinking they're normal lights.

I like these as you get a perfect view of their construction which is good for explaining to others how a fluorescent tube works. This reminds me that I need to get a new 36w PL-L UVC lamp ready for Spring to keep the pond algae free.

How is the lamp gettered from impurities without the help of the phosphor ?

very cool to see some osram ones, most of the ones I see are Philips ones, or Cheap china clones which use Quartz glass rather then Low ion content soda lime glass like these osram (and other name brand) ones do Smile

Surely quartz is best as that is completely transparent to UV...

apparently it can go a bit opaque over time when used in these applications, so the best is actually soda lime glass with most of the iron content removed (its the iron content that blocks short wave UV in normal glass) im sure James could fill in all the details I have missed Smile
