Osram 2000w HQI-T Large wattage metal halide lamp :) As it's for 400v control gear, I'll probably never get the chance to fire it up. Note the twin starting electrodes and bimetallic switches to remove them from the circuit when the lamp runs up to temperature. Nice big halide dose! 4200 k 9000 h 205,000 lm !!!

What I am getting is going to be 2 phases with 480V between the 2 phases

When a household appliance pisses you off, just wire it between them and then piss it off Smile I'd love to see a hair dryer on 400v

A German imitation of the original British MBI 2000W - note the unusual inward-pointing conical dimple on the bulb crown. This was a GEC feature to support the lamp better in the fixture.

Mark, you need a 240-415V autotransformer. GEC/Parmar/Venture used to make a 2000W rated one, maybe still do, and this is perfect for lighting lamps intended for 3 phase supply. Much cheaper than a high power variac! I have a smaller 1500W transformer and this also seems to handle the 2kW lamps without getting too hot.

Good idea James Colin could use one of them too as he has lots of high power 415V lamps!

Oh yes indeed there are ways of doing it. I was going to get a couple of 3kva 110v site transformers and have them in series wired in reverse to get 480v. Never did get around to it though!
