The original ballast had burnt out & this still stinks even after cleaning it. I also replaced the original Philips igniter with the VS unit you see here, as this ballast does not have the extra tapping required for the Philips.

Philips floodlights always seem to have very good castings.

Considering that it takes a short to burn out a ballast, that old ignitor could very possibly be dead (and also destroying ballasts) anyway

I don't know the history of this fixture, it just appeared in the skip! It could very well be that the igniter was knackered, or it'd been left with a failed lamp in for a long time
