Thats the Christmas rope light hanging down, its 18 metres long, and just easier to leave up all year!, the light feed goes directly up to the loft from the light.

Its said that MBF lamps have the lowest efficiency for HID, but for 50 watt, (57 with gear loss), you get 1800 lumens of white light, and as you can see from the pic, its plenty for the average street, yes you can do the same with 26watt PL, but I have seen a 36watt PL in a street round the corner from me, and its not really much better than this.
And considering the ban, National Lamps are still listing them for sale.
