2X4w conversion, tube layout
|
An impulse purchase of this tiny 8w LED bulkhead prompted what is probably my most tedious and smallest conversion to date. As soon as I saw it for sale at a car boot, I knew what I was gonna convert it to, so bought and immediately began to change it over to its new lamp type. the LED driver was dead, so I destroyed it all (felt so good btw) and after loads of measuring and careful drilling and cutting, the light now features two 4w tubes.
The whole conversion only just fits on the tray, but in the end it was all worth it. I also have an older matching bulkhead for 9w PL, sporting a clear patterned cover rather than the opal one. I decided PL is rather boring in comparison to two 4w tubes, so I swapped them over to show off the lights whole new appearance. Its easily become my most favourite conversion of all time, and after the gear trays been painted white, should look like a factory original setup.
Cutting rectangular holes for the lamp holders isn't easy at all, its best to make a paper template of the whole tray first, and then by using a hole punch, tap a centre inside the lines, using a fine drill bit to make the holes. Then by using a chisel, you are then able to connect and punch through the holes, using a file to level everything up.
