Crompton Robust
Another popular bulkhead, the Robust was one of Cromptons more renown bulkheads. It could be used with SOX (18w or 35w) or fluorescent (twin or triple 8w) and came with clear or opal covers. This example features the former.
Obtained 3 years ago from college, it was very badly neglected with green mouldy water inside, rendering the original ballast knackered. With a new ballast and a rewire, and a much needed overhaul, it came up extremely well, however recently I gave it another rewire with wire salvaged from a scrap Crompack, and an addition of a starter socket, to give the hard of starting SOX lamps a chance of striking.

Shocked Didn`t know these were SS assisted?

They aren't from factory, the fittings usually have an internal igniter ballast, but because the original ballast in this was kaput, and the new one requiring an external igniter, and considering how hard they are to get (SX26) I have had to make do with a starter, the next best thing. I believe its only 18w SOX you can wire a starter onto, correct me if im wrong though.

Dave there are 18W SOX ballasts on eBay at the minute for 9.99 that use the capacitor start like the XGC001! Was this originally an 18W?

Yeah Its always been 18w SOX, Its the only 18w SOX bulkhead I actually have atm, ive been looking for a few more to add to the collection.
