Passat has had another issue today

...not with the bit between the seat and the steering wheel this time lol. Stalled it at the tip today (collecting BC tubes from the lamp bin!) and then noticed the gear stick was moving quite severely after that and a clunk had developed. Checked underneath and found this, one of the gearbox mounts sheared off completely and the other with a large crack/split in it!

Good job this happened now and not in 3 weeks time, when it's got to transport me and also many things 6.5 hours to Cornwall and back!

And people take the Mick out of me for driving "over complicated temperamental French shite" all the time. Okay, the Lada is a temperamental sod at times, that I'll admit!

TBF I think these mounts probably fractured when I crashed it. After doing some research, apparently it's not unknown for them to crack with the impact and then later fully break after a further jolt, e.g. stalling it trying to set off in 2nd from too low speed

@Zel I have a soft spot for a French car myself. My two best cars have been Peugeot's, a 306 1.9D L (base model, non turbo, did 50,000 miles in it, over 200K on clock when I sold it) and a 206 SW 1.6 XSi which I paid £290 for & had it about 5 years!

I always used to have pugs when I had cars had several 306 Gti-6s and 106 GTIs I still have a turbo 1.6 106 xsi. In later years I switched to Renault and had a 172 clio for about 4 years was a good car did 50k in it no problems!

Theres nothing wrong with French cars, I`ve had 5 of them, and another 2 with French engines, I fancy a Citroen next, as from what all the mechanics say at work, out of all French cars, the Citroens are the best built.

Never had a French car and the nearest I've got to a German car was a Montego 1.3 which had a 5 speed golf gearbox, I did over150.000 nearly trouble free miles with that car and always did the servicing myself.

Previous Xantia was bought with 198K on the clock and after a service drove like a new car. Four years on, and the guy I sold it on to is still running it, up to nearly 220K now and going strong. This one is probably the most over-complicated one of the bunch, so sure I'll have "fun" in the longer term. Biggest headache is likely to be that PSA's legacy parts supply is downright diabolical.

One of the most comfortable and nicest car I ever owned was my VOLVO 360, it had a 2.0Lt Renault engine in, and pulled like a trojan!, even with a caravan on!, back in my caravan days, I remember going to Llandudno and getting stuck behind one of those old fairground lorries!, After seeing a clear bit of road, I overtook this, (thinking its do or die time if something comes the other way while I`m overtaking), but I dropped the VOLVO into 4th, and was quite shocked when it threw me back in the seat WHILST dragging the caravan! Shocked , amazing engine!

340/360 were good old motors, 440/460 that followed it weren't bad either. Sadly the latter did tend to suffer from the electrical infidelity common to the mid 90s Volvo's, especially the ECUs that liked to fail at the drop of a hat. Have always fancied an old 240, sadly just never managed to find one at a price I could stomach. Having had several Saabs I'd love to properly compare! I've never had something that goes like the Activa though, hoping to get it on a track at some point to see what it can really do.

Fixed this yesterday, I found that actually both left and right mounts were fully broken and looking at the breaks, had been hanging on by a thread for quite a while. Safe to say it drives much better now!
