WhiteSON Installation Still Going Strong in 2019 Was frankly staggered when I walked into the Milton Keynes Westcroft Morrison's today and discovered that there store is almost entirely lit by WhiteSON lamps with some additional ambient light over the aisles being provided by fluorescent (T5 - some of which have been replaced by LEDs now - you can see at the back of the store where the light level drops). Been so long since I saw this technology in use I'd forgotten what a pleasantly warm light it gives. Really was like taking a step back into the late 90s when our local Morrison's (Inverurie) opened, but in a good way! Yeah Morrisons seem to have loved it back in the day. You still see them in some stores in those tiltable recessed fittings.

Seems to still be getting looked after too. Probably a dozen or so out across the whole (pretty large) store. Only area I reckon they'd been replaced was the entrance lobby where LED eyeball fittings had gone in. Granted, it's a double height ceiling there, so quite likely more of a pig to access for relamping. Do wonder what lamps they're running...The Iwasaki NHT range are the only ones I've ever had the chance to play around with myself...but wouldn't expect a supermarket to use them as they're expensive as hell!

Philips SDW-T are a dead cert.

They have a them left in my local store (downlighters and tiltable). They are all the standard orange colour SONs though. The main lights in the shop used to be recessed twin 5ft/6ft fittings that ran Philips tubes but they have unfortunately been taken out for LED lights (same for some of the exit signs). The magazine isle is lit by 54w t5 fitting with Bell tubes. The arches in the store seem to of been left alone and are definitely fluorescent.

Not at ours, it’s all LED now, the white son spots over the fruit isle are now very powerful ‘white’ LED, so strong you can’t look directly at them!, the rows of recessed T8 are the originals, but have some weird ‘soft pink’ LED tubes in, they look odd to look at direct, but do fill the store with a good colour, even the shatter proof weather packs in the bakery have LED tubes in!, the only fluorescent there now are the induction lamps in the car park!

Exactly the same story in my local apart from some 600x600 LED panels rounf the tills, pharmacy and Timpsons outlet

I forgot about the bakery part Laughing my local one still has twin fluorescent fittings and the staff bread and pizza area have a mix of t5 and t8 weatherproof fittings. The bug zappers run fluorescent lamps and philips starters at least. LED won't be replacing fluorescent with insect killers as they don't produce enough uv.

I also forgot to mention, out of all the changes, they have left the 70 watt WDL halides in their recessed cans in the foyer, and at the walkway behind the tills, so all is not lost Cool , they all work too, without any flickering or green lamps so they seem to be being looked after?

Well that's the end of that then. Went in there yesterday and aside from some of the spot lights behind the checkouts this has all been replaced with LED tat now. The average colour temperature has now shifted from a nice warm colour to an oddly cool white that's not quite enough to classify as daylight, so just feels odd.

Shame. They would have gone for many more years. My local store has SON recessed lights but with normal orange colour lamps.

Surprised they have lasted this long tbh. SDW-T lamps are quite expensive due to their rareness. I mean you can pick up a CDM-T’s for nothing really in comparison.

Milton Keynes seems to have a magical ability to preserve old lighting. Rugby also seems to have the magic.

Never noticed these were white SON 🤔 re the comment about Milton Keynes and old lighting. Yes that's true! It is going bit by bit and I'm collecting it all on the street lighting side.
