Ring 40w miniature crown silver lamp spotlight fitting I'd been after an example of one of these sorts of fittings for a while and up popped this one for sale recently. Shame it's not a proper 1970's one, but nevertheless it's still decent quality and of a cute compact size. Although it's far from new (the base has gone a bit yellow!) it functions very well - when viewed from the sides it looks quite dim, but stand in front of it and you'll be hit with the full force of the 40w lamp's light and heat output!

I remember when you could go shopping for clothes and the shops were all full of hundreds of fittings like these, all with their crown silver lamps. The energy usage from them all must have been massive. This would be in addition to row after row of fluorescent too!

Certainly was. Warm too in the summer unless they had air conditioning, which back then a lot of places didn't. Best you could hope for was just a ventilation system to bring in fresh air.

Agree with Rich here, our school canteen was full of these too, spot lighting the tables in the alcove’s Cool, back then though we didn’t have rip off energy prices! Rolling Eyes
