Very Large Illuminated Art Globes

I spotted this article about an art installation that was installed in my home city back in 2002... and I never even knew it was there until I saw the article!

The next time I was in town, I decided to see them for myself and grab a few photos.
They are MASSIVE and would look cool at night while lit up but according to the article they have been unlit for a quite a few years although there is still an electrical supply to them so they are hoping they might get the go ahead to refurbish them and bring them back to their former glory.
It's funny as I quite often visit shops literally in the next street yet I have never seen them before!

Thinking whether inside each lantern is a complete standard lantern of the time, or they went to assembling ad hoc gear trays and lamp sockets
