Guessing they light have had issues with the plastic threads degrading due to heat and the lamps then falling out of fittings. Especially if they'd been done up a bit too tight in the first place?

Most probably - even I had trouble getting it to work in the lampholder I usually use to test lamps!

I got 3x Philips 15W parallel 3 arch style CFLS that have the plastic B22 bases and that would result in poor connection to the contacts
