Unknown fluorescent light - open

This is one properly strange, but awesome looking fluorescent I got from a fellow collector. I love how deep and oversized the diffuser looks, yet how slim the spine and end pieces are. To remove it, you have to unclip it out of the lip down one side, which in turn allows the diffuser to hinge round and come out the other lip.

Once its off, you can clearly see the properly bodged conversion inside. It was a single tube fitting originally that at some point got converted, and as a result both lamp holders were now positioned that close to the diffuser it had begun to scorch it, however it can only be scorched it if it actually worked properly to begin with. Since its quick start, it relies heavily on a good earth, and as you'll see that earth barely exists, meaning tubes really don't like to start in this fitting at all. I decided immediately when I got it home to create a bracket that'll bring both tubes closer into the centre of the fitting away from the diffuser, whilst also running some earth wires to each end to hopefully improve reliability at start up. All 4 lamp holders will be changed to matching new ones, and a small copper strip will be added to aid in bringing an earth to the lamp caps. Once that's done and the fitting works properly, restoration will involve a good respray.
