There are no cathode shields on this. The developing ring of black (mark of use) is on the other end. What's the difference between guards and shields?

Anode guards are whats on the seimens bc tube you uploaded nick. 2 strips either side of the cathode. Shields is a complete ring around the cathode

Yep the little flat plates either side don't stop the banding and ware marks!

It seems the guards/plates are an essential part of the lamp function - receiver of electrons? I see various versions on Atlas Super Fives, Tamlites and these old relics. I assume the full rings / shields perform the same function while adding an extra boredom quotient.

Lol I think that's a good way of putting it although I do have quite a few Unshielded supers 5s!
