Atlas 40w fluorescent ballast GLS lamps
Some very unusual lamps here which I recently found - these were intended as ballasts for 40w fluorescent tubes in a range of kitchen fluorescent fittings Atlas sold in the 1950's and 1960's. These days the fittings are rarer than the ballast lamps!

What such amazing find - I can see how rudimental it looks too Smile I guess the purpose of using incandescent lamps was another resource saving technique Smile

Quite possibly! Cool

Whilst everything was near normal during the 50s - there were still some shortages and of course makeshift ideas still had to be implemented Smile another theory is that using both incandescent and fluorescent tubes improved the colour rendering of the space Smile

Nice find! I tried to track some of these down to fix a loghting exhibit in a museum. It had an entire hall dedicated to electricity and one of the exhibits was the Atlas 40w fluorescent fitting that these would have been intended for. In the end, I had to craft a ballast and starter into the fitting in order to make it light once more. You can't see my modifications, however, anyone who actually knows what the fitting is, will be able to spot the lack of light from the semi-concealed starter lamp.
