Castaldi Polo bollard - Gear
The gear within these bollards is proper packed in, there's barely enough room for it all! Originally these bollards had HF electronic ballasts, but since they were dead, I decided to convert them to switch start. The job was actually really quite easy, if not tedious due to the really tightly packed nature of the fittings.

I had to drill new holes for the ballasts and the starter sockets, and also remove a cable grip to allow the starter socket to fit in properly. The ballast is a Helvar LD16, but it does give the option for 18w PL lamps too, so hopefully these will prove reliable for me. The starter is a brand new S10, I chose these because getting to the gear is an absolute nightmare, so I don't want these failing anytime soon. Even if they do though, because I've wired the bollards to allow two pin and four pin lamps to be used, it means I have a failsafe backup if I can't be bothered to replace the starter

Nice modification, I should think these will last as good as forever with this set up. What brand where the original HF ballasts? Anything decent or just cheap rubbish?

From memory I think they were Phillips.

I guess the HF-Matchbox would be about the right size to fit in these, not likely to like the damp and condensation much though!
