Beta5 is indeed right, most of these Thorn/Atlas ballasts are open spaces!, the GF range are like just a laminated core with two plates welded to them.

Seen this a few times with various ballasts, essentially the same sized cores just in different casings! With the sheet metal cased ballasts it is presumably cheaper to just use the same cases and crimp them further up for the smaller lamination stacks. The extra metal may also give it a bit more heat sinking?

I like the older Thorn design though, it’s able to create good air flow around the coils than any other ballast design Cool
