Narva Hg/E 2 40W (HQE40) High pressure spectral lamp
This lamp originally developed by Osram in the 1930s as laboratory light source. It consist of a tubular outer envelope which fins to towards the end mad from soda-lime glass. This limits the transistion at around 280nm. Should even lower wavelength light be desired a hole would be melted in the side of the lamp.
The early lamps of this design like this one feature vacuum shrunk arc tube seals instead of the more common pinch seal design. It is believed that this design was used longer with Narva than with Osram. Also Narva developed in the 70s a revised version of this lamp, featuring a pinch sealed arc tube with platinum heat reflective coating at the end and novel toroidal shaped starcing electrodes, minimizing the effect of glowing red electrodes on the lamps spectrum.

This lamps runs at 40W, .5A and 85-115V making it rather similar to american H45 lamps.

Nice little lamp! I managed to find one of these a couple of years ago but getting the correct socket took a bit of searching.

Did you eventually get one? I may have one, these were used a train signal lights here if i recall correctly

R U sure that the American 40/50W MV lamps have different arc current and voltage than the European 50W MV lamps?

Alex's information on the electrical values of the NARVA Hg/E2 lamp is completely correct:

interesting to see there is a HgE/1 and HgE/2, I was under the impression these 40W German spectral mercury lamps used a low voltage high current arc tube, and certainly in this lamp the electrodes look quite beefy for its size, but its interesting to see there were actually 2 types one high voltage low current and one low voltage and high current, I would love to see a direct side-by-side comparison of a HgE/1 and HgE/2 lamp of the same age Smile
