Interesting to see a frosted version, appearance wise they remind me of some of the earlier low wattage LED candles!

Definitely, I could see the electronic transformer failing before the capsule if burned base up, I expect the heat issue would be even worse than CFL with these.

Not necessarily. Most of the heat from halogens is IR, the gear just hve to be covered with something reflective to reflect the incident IR awy from it and out of the lamp. The remaining conducted heat would then be (i assume) somewhere on par with todays heatsink-less LED lamps. But then, considering that the "transformer" here is likely nothing but a dimmer circuit pinned to one specific setting, it doesn't have much in the way of thermally senstive components. The SCRs have max junction temp around 150C typically and likely are pushed to the limit

Advances on 240v halogen capsules soon made these 12v transformer based lamps not cost effective enough to produce

I remember seeing those around 2008 to 2009 when I was in my late childhood/early teens and I was too hyperfixated on CFL cos I thought oh well I don't see the rush of getting these only to realise they were something unique and special when I joined LG back in 2014

@Slyspark, I only saw them in stores especially the John Lewis one in Reading (as they stock Philips) and a lighting showroom in Henley On Thames

Ash has a very good point here Cool, something I’ve noticed this week is, that simple mica disc that Venture put around their stems in the coated, 70 watt halide lamps greatly reduces the heat from going upwards!, I don’t know if this is the discs intended purpose?, but it certainly makes a difference?
