AA4 dimmed

I recently got 12 atlas Atlantic 4 fittings from a school that was still running these with all the tubes you see here until 3 weeks ago. Here they are connected to my furse unit and doing some dimming tests on it out of all 12 fittings 24 lamps 3 were until when they were still in situ in the school these turned out to be bad / contaminated / failed lamps only the fittings and control gear are mint despite 51 years of use.

Wow very nice! One of them seems to be glowing the cathodes more than the others, has it got a different heating transformer or something?

No weirdly it is just the thorn tube we noted that so changed it around and it was the same

That's odd, wonder if it's got lower resistance cathodes? How are they dimmed, lowering the voltage into the choke? Awesome to see magnetic dimmables though, must be very rare now.

Amazing to see the magnetic dimmable geared fluorescent fixtures in use - do the tubes shimmer like you see on electronic ballasted dimmable gear or not?

They definitely shimmer on low, can kind of see this in the picture

Dimmable magnetic ballasts are mainly common in the US and Canada, and are essentially rapid-start ballasts, but the main current limiting coils are connected to the dimmer while the heating transformer coils are connected directly to the mains.
Can you take picture of the ballasts of these fittings?
