Flat Eterna fluorescent light with flat ballast.
Bought these must be 15 years ago from B&Q and used them for years on the top of the kitchen cupboards in mum's kitchen to give a gentle light onto the ceiling. Been stored o
in the loft since moving but they are going to be used again in my living room under the shelves with a 2700k triposphor tube. They are perfect for this. They have an unusual ballast which is of a 'flat' design. The switch is of poor quality and has been wired out as it's not required. They are plastic, so note the thermal fuse in top of the ballast. They always remind me of the fluorescent lights that ships have.

I remember these - strange things and I spose, the thing that came before T4 & T5 HF under-shelf fittings

I find it hard to trust those HF under shelf fittings after I had one that started producing smoke. I was around when it started and switched it off, but wonder what would have happened if it was left on.

Interesting and like you said similar to the bunk lights you see on ships. I wonder what the dt rating of this ballast is? It looks quite large although flat, guessing it must be a fairly cool running one when surrounded by plastic.
That smoking HF one sounds rather dodgy! At least the full sized HF ballasts mostly have metal casings so can't do too much damage!

It's never given any problems and was used daily for a few hours.

I vaguely recall someone giving me a load of these once (well used) and I stripped them for the ballasts.

Some of the little 8W chokes used in the MLP's etc. get quite scorching so these must be cooler running than those. Look like nice little units anyway Smile
