Thorn Gamma 6: 18w SOX to PL-S Conversion
This Thorn Gamma 6 which has been lighting up my back patio certainly has had some different lamps and gear in it over the years!

When I got it, it was fitted for 80w MBF which I ran for a while before converting it to run a 35w CDM-T lamp.
I then got bored with that and fitted 50w MBF gear until I got bored with that also and put some 18w SOX gear in.
It has ran with 18w SOX the longest (since I've had it anyway) but I have now became bored with that also!

The photo on the left shows the lantern with it's 18w SOX gear with the potential options for replacement: either 7, 9 or 11w PL-S or a Philips SL13.
The photo on the right is what I settled on! I have fitted it with a nice UK-made Sylvania 11w lamp in colour 840 but I can change the colour for something warmer or a lower power lamp like 9w if I so desire.
I have angled the lamp so as to reduce shadow from the support frame.
I have not bothered with any PFC.

You may notice that it has 4 connections on the terminal block. The usual live, neutral and earth, the fourth one is the switched live from the photocell being sent back down the column to run some other decorative lights.

The 11w PL-S lamp fits quite nicely in the lantern tbh and if you wanted more output then I reckon that an 18 or 26w PL-L or PL-T would work very well indeed!

The poor naked PL-S lamp did suffer a bit during the spells that dropped bellow zero this winter though.
You can tell when the temperature is getting into the single digits when you look out and see that it's a bit dim :)

I've considered doing a similar thing with my SOX Gamma 6. Might even consider twin 8w T5. Back when I had an 11w PL in the garden, it would start extremely dim for the first few mins, the slight flicker could be seen from the house.

That's quite a neat conversion. I like it! Smile

Philips SL lamps were better in winter for this application (choke inside the glass) good idea and works well in winter...

Nice project, I've often liked the idea of converting a G6 to some form of PL, mounted in the same way a SOX lamp would be. Suppose you could adapt a tube guard sleeve over the lamp to trap a bit of heat?
