Real shame GEC didn't carry on - their products were excellent. I guess the base for the snap starter allows them to make just one 'base' product, then add the starter when it's required fopr that particular production run. Saves costs on designing 2 different la,ps and the tooling, etc that goes with that. My best guess anyway

@Slyspark: Indeed, GEC stuff was some of the very best! I agree with what you say about the snap starter base, pretty sure it was to keep things simple as many of the external ignitor lamps use that base as part of the support structure.
