It's strange seeing a SON-E in this. I'm used to seeing T lamps used usually. Will certainly give a nice soft light.
I'm really pleased how the light these give off is softer to the eye and i feel makes better use of the optic
E lamps do look better in these
I always had a soft spot for SON E, mostly as they were common in MK and they gives off a nicer light
why people moved away from SON E to SON T i'm not sure?
Indeed.
Son t cheaper and more light output.
Makes sense then why SON E went out of favour towards the mid 2000s when cost cutting and more bang for the buck..
high wattage son I lamps actually came to be in the late 1960's in street lighting, think large wattage sonI lamps fell out of favour in the 1980's
Ooh really! Was the idea of SON I swap from MBFU?
Well when you think of back then when they were being retrofitted into big old lanterns like big G.E.C Z8526 and Thorn Alpha 3 ect, they had optics designed for big MBF lamps.

I have to give a shout out to James, as this is what inspired me to put the Arc back to how it should have looked!
, E lamps look nicer in these than T
Thats nice of you Rich! I really do like SON E for the softer light
Yes the E looks so much better in here, we never used elliptical lamps here, not even for 50 and 70 installations, but I remember seeing them in a little village in Staffordshire round about 2005?, when you posted this, it instantly reminded me of them, and a new found use for my Philips haul
Milton Keynes use to use elliptical SON E for 50w and 70w what appeared from the time they went from MBFU to SON, i assume they used SON E to be simliar lookto MBFU lamps? I did like them alor seeing SON E as a kid in the late 1990s before around 2004ish they went to SON T. Nice to hear they were used else where from what you say

The very first SON installation in our town were 150 watt along Booth Lane, but the first residential installation was about a year after using Industria 2600s and 50 watt SON-T, they mounted the 2500s on new steel columns in direct post top form
, I remember how awesome they looked as I’d never actually seen BETA type lanterns mounted like this!, I also remember being surprised how far back the lamps sat in the 2600 though! I hadn’t seen this before either!
All so exciting stuff back then! I assume mounting the lamp at the back was to shine more light forwards?
Definitely
, they looked awesome when they were new, after 32 years of SOX, to see SON in a 2600, (not even knowing who made them or what they were back then), the light from these ‘new’ street lights was something special to see for me! , that’s that magic I wish we had again with street lighting, in the early 90s!

Reminds me when i saw CDM for the first time in 2006 age 12 and thinking how exciting it was! Those times are going to be real hard to see once more
