Thorn 400W CSI Compact Source Iodine metal halide lamp
I have always wanted a CSI lamp on account of their technical awesomeness

I was (still am!) looking for a PAR64 1000W example, but when this August 1973, Vintage Thorn 400W example of the original CSI design showed up for cheap I just could not pass it up :)

especially as I had only seen very few pictures of CSI lamps lit, I think the only ones being FrontSideBus's awesome photos of his 1000W CSI and CID PAR64 examples

so I was especially curious to see how the original 400W example would perform

and I have to say it was quite interesting and very impressive, it really struggled to strike at first on my 5Kv ignitor, but it eventually struck up from a glow discharge and it ran up very quickly indeed to a brilliant intense cool white light

its always impressive to see just under how much load they are under when running by how hot their are just after switch off, I think I have only ever seen glowing molly seals like this on CSI lamps,

for those wondering I ran the lamp using 600W SON choke with 210V being fed into its 250V tap, which gave me a nice 5A that the lamp is rated for :)

Looking good Dez, don’t these run with the halide dose completely evaporated?, imagine the pressure and temperature crammed into that tiny space Shocked

Very nice! I’d also love to get a 1000W PAR64 CID lamp but they’re not cheap. I expect a few will turn up at some point for a good price.

thanks guys Smile I think Rich these do indeed run in an unsaturated regime but I have not been able to verify that but I do recall reading it somewhere! indeed they are pretty extreme lamps which is one of the reasons I like them so much Smile and indeed andy there where some GE 1000W PAR64 CID (the daylight variant of the CSI lamp) on ebay a couple years ago for cheap but the seller hiked the price before I was able to buy one sadly, and more recently there was some GE 1000W PAR64 CSI lamps for cheap on ebay, but turned out the seller did not actually have them in stock when I tried to buy! so try as I might I have not had much luck trying get one! but as you say im sure one will eventually turn up!

I wonder if the chap FrontSideBus got his Thorn 1Kw CSI lamp and fixture from has any more lying around, id love to get a complete fixture! I remember he had a few at the time for about £60 for a lamp and fixture, I could not afford that back then, but I might be able to stretch it now!

That's rather nice! I have to say, I don't blame you for running that under a 'safety cover' of sorts....

Well I bet it was chucking off all sorts of nasty UV lol. I almost won a bare 1kw lamp a few years ago. I really should drag the PAR64 out for a run but I CBA dragging out the massive chokes that go with them Laughing I did post links to OQ1000 auctions a few times but nobody was interested afaik.

thanks Sylspark, Smile as FrontSideBus says, this being a bare lamp would chuck out some serious UV, which is the primary reason I had the pint glass over it, as I could do without the sun burn and my vintage computers in this room are yellowed enough as it is Laughing I was actually worried the heat from the lamp would pop the pint glass, especially when I noticed the lamp shifted off to one side while running so I hastily switched it off! I was very interested in getting one of those OQ1000 fixtures but I just could not make it work at the time sadly (as I was also bed bound) was it an ebay auction? I seem to recall you had to privately contact the guy who had them but its been about 8 years since then! im just wondering if he has any left Smile
