use this starter for best lamp life
here I took a junky stater drilled a hole in it case. Then installed normally open push button switch. solderd two wires on switches and one on each pin of starter base.  you manually start your florescent by holding button in for 3 seconds until cathodes glow a bit and release.  this what I use for extending life of vintage tubes and minimize the cathode sputtering. this why it not uncommon to see orginal lamps in a desklamps.

I'm also thinking about making one of these, definitely a useful addition to the spares bin for testing purposes. I've got a shorted starter I made, but the arcing from removing and inserting it can potentially cause damage to the socket
