Non standard 9w PL-S lamp

Here you see one of the four lamps from the wife's old nail gel curer. I assumed the unit must have magnetic ballasts in seeing as it took these 2-pin 9w PL-S lamps, but powering it up revealed that the tubes instant started with no signs of the normal glow bottle start. I also found the unit had no weight to it & when I opened it up I found it just had a small circuit board with CFL style circuitry.

As you can see here the lamp does not have a glow bottle but just a capacitor across the cathodes where the starter would normally be.

That’s interesting, good job they never had these out for mass sale!, how did you discover this little gem?

The wife said her curer wasn't curing very well so was looking for some better quality new lamps for it. I noticed something wasn't right with the unit though as there was no weight to it so obviously had no magnetic ballasts inside.

This lamp design seems to be standard for Chinese appliances - a 2 pin lamp for HF ballast connection. Most replacement Chinese UV PL-C 9W lamps you can get on Ebay etc are the same. I seen those also in a variety of UV appliances, bug zappers, and a /865 version in desk lamps

The fanciest one i seen, used a lamp with slightly different base (the "starter" is octagonal, i.e. cut corners) to prevent use of "magnetic" lamp

Didn't know that Ash, thanks. I thought it was just these cheepo nail gel curers as I see there is loads of these UV lamps on eBay with a picture of said curer and they state specifically that they're only suitable for that application.

She's decided she wants a new one anyway, so this unit has gone in the bin lol
