8' 125w Pop Pack Ballast

Lovely old potted ballast from a rusty Pop Pack that I found outside someone's house, left for the scrap man! Luckily I got there first as this ballast is in pretty good condition and runs silently.

Series capacitor within the fitting is dated 12/71

Decent gear that. Probably get a more exact date from the series cap - no doubt has it's manufacture date printed on it somewhere.

Guessing it was the later ones that had the 2 separate ballasts in series then?

interesting! I would say this is actually an earlier one, pre-dating the series ballasts, but most this early have black coloured ones, this must be a fairly rare transitional fixture, all white etc but still single choke, it would be interesting to see what the date on the series cap is as Slyspark says Smile

Yup, the series ones came after this - they used the open frame type that followed this potted version.

The series ones was a better setup!

Cool! So, probably somewhere around 53yrs old then.... Best that LED!

How the series capacitor boosts the OCV of the ballast from the mains 240V to 440V which is enough to start krypton 100W T12?
Lightbulbfun   [29 May, 2024 at 06:55 PM]
it does not boost the OCV, nor is it required for a Krypton 100W T12, in fact those tubes can explictly be run without a capacitor, and its why a lot of later 8ft British fixtures are for 100W tubes only since they lack the series capacitor that a 125W Argon 8ft T12 tube needs to run if on 240V mains
