Thorn DFLD 400w "Hipak"
Thorn Hipak high-bay luminaire for 400w metal halide lamps. Old and bashed around a bit but that just gives it a bit of character IMO :)

These fittngs were designed in the early 1970's to be able to be quickly and easily installed and also to be able to withstand the harsh conditions often found in factories and foundries ect such as heat, vibration and corrosive fumes. They were available in 250 & 400w SON, MBF and MBI versions. The lampholder can be shimmed so that both the 250 and 400w lamps are correctly positioned in the reflector.
This range of high bay industrial lights received a Design Council Award in 1974.

The ballast is a sealed unit while the ignitor and capacitor are mounted separately in a box above it with an air-gap. This allows the unit to function in ambient temperatures of up to 45'c!

The galvanised steel frame, stainless fixings and spun anodised aluminium reflector offer superb resistance to corrosive environments.

I just had to have one of these. I have a list in my mind of iconic fittings that I want to get in my collection.
