wonder why some had fat caps and some had normal caps, as it does not seem to go on age, there must be a reason?

I wonder if its from the old gls style cap bc tube line, instead of decomissioning it maybe they just modded it to use these deeper caps since bc tubes of that type have a steeper edge and are slightly shorter.
