This is a sox lamp running on DC. Interestingly, almost immediately after applying power, all the neon moved to one end. I honestly thought it was only metal vapours affected in this way.

They reckon mercury lamps run better on DC too?

The effect works with all ions, and especially quickly with gases since they are so light. The same effect is visible in neon filled fluorescent lamps, where the neon and mercury can be separated.
