That's a rather nice wear mark. I've not seen one quite like that before!

I suspect the filament's emmitter sputtered onto the plates, and now the filament is bare and in an EOL state but the plates still have almost substantial emitter on them allowing the tube to continue to run but the heat and bombardment from the electrons coming off the plate created this peep hole.
