Nice to see EL out there. Interested how they are ballasted inside, i assume just 120V through a resistor or capacitor ?

It is just a capacitive method. You can find this subject at Light-emitting capacitor (LEC)

No what i asked is what other driving components are there. The EL will work just fine with 120V straight without any ballast, but will be extremely unsafe as it will tend to burn spectacularly in case of any minor insulation defect. So normally rhere would be something in series with it as a current limit, even if not really required as a ballast. To get high output out of EL high frequency is required and therefore electronics, but here it is probably just low output straight on 50/60 Hz

Interesting idea
, we have a cheap version here where it's a low power LED in the shape of an outdoor light switch!, it comes with its own battery though, not mains! Quite handy for cupboards and other dark places

@Ash: Probably the coating itself may be a resistor to control the current flow. I have Light-emitting capacitor panel with Clear Drawing with black coating at the rear

Thats the thing - EL is self regulating (by means of the impedance of its capacitance and the supplied frequency), but the film is delicate and not defect free. A latent defect in any of the layers of the film will cause a short circuit. With no external current limiting to the mA range (either by resistor or by the current limit of an electronic EL driver), the conductive layers will heat up and burn at the point of short circuit

Yep, even I have Failing Electroluminescent Night Light nearing end its life here.
