18wx2 linear fluorescent dimmable ballasts Picked a few of these up today. Never used dimmable ballasts, know little about them but I can't imagine they're too good for tube life. 18wx2 linear fluorescent dimmable ballasts

Picked a few of these up today.
Never used dimmable ballasts, know little about them but I can't imagine they're too good for tube life.
Don't think i've seen a dimmed fluorescent im my life!
Can't wait to see what they look like.

Got Philips dimmable gear in the fittings in my office. Interestingly, the instructions state that new tubes must be run in at full output for a minimum of 100 hours before you dim them....

I heard that too. Apparently it's to let the mercury migrate to a part of it. I've made a twin fitting and stuck a couple of the Homebase 2700 T12's I had in my ceiling fitting in it and it seems to work great!

I've seen the 100-hour thing too. I have a some dimmable ballasts - as test setups, nothing permanently installed (yet) though.

I've seen the 100-hour thing three. I suspect older tubes that have more mercury in them and don't do that first startup 'dim in the middle' thing would be ok

interesting it one of common American brands of ballast. but ive never seen this style of ballast before.

No idea. Someone had a couple for sale and I brought them. I have a couple of newer philips 5ft T12's that do the dim in the middle thing. The 2ft T12's seem to be alright though. Dimmed fluorescent tubes look fantastic but dimming brings up the wear on the ends/imperfect coatings really clearly. Be good to have on an automatic system for hours a building is occupied.
