Nice, simple trusty floodlight. Despite the high power consumption, for the minimal use most floodlights see it's fine. I'd trust that floodlight to be fine for 20 years+.

Yes I do like those 500W halogen style floodlights - they're a lot better than LED in terms of brightness and I suppose the heat emitted can help to keep frost away from the car on freezing mornings - something I'd appreciate when having to go to work for 8:45am Smile

That looks like an older and slightly better one, some of the modern cheap ones sold in the DIY stores towards the end were made of pot metal and corroded in no time!
I like them for a quick bright light where the burning hours are low so energy consumption isn't a worry and they give a nice light colour quality Cool

Interesting I didn't expect it to be of a better quality to the modern ones like the one that has been in service since 2014 - even if it was better quality I'd still want to keep it as it is in the box as collection Cool and same it does a great job for when you want to go out in the front patio and only need it for when going to the car to taking out the rubbish and whatever short tasks - 500W bright enough and short burst so energy costs not a worry Smile

Yes some of the very last ones a few years ago were absolutely awful, horrible thin metal and paint that was barely worth bothering with! some of the older ones seemed a bit better in my experience.

Yeah it is a shame despite how good looking they are when new Sad fingers crossed that I'll get another 10+ years with that Screwfix halogen floodlight because I don't want a horrid LED replacement so I'll be looking for another halogen floodlight to future proof this situation Smile and what is even brilliant is that the linear halogen lamps last for a very very long time!

If you do put this in service, grease the screw that holds the glass closed. If you don't, next time you need to open it, it'll have corroded shut.
Flurofan96   [06 May, 2025 at 09:28 PM]
Such a shame that the screws used on these are the steel that corrodes unlike the type of screws that do not corrode like the ones on the Coughtrie SP.6 but I'll make sure to grease it if i ever want to put it into service. For now I'd like to keep it in the collection as it would be a crying shame to have it weathered and now that they're no longer made

You'll get a reaction whenever you have 2 dissimilar metals in contact. A stainless steel floodlight would have been prohibitively expensive and an aluminium screw too weak. So, in this instance, grease is the answer.
Oliver   [07 May, 2025 at 03:15 PM]
The screw failed on halogen floodlight so it was just replaced with a higher quality nut and bolt.
Flurofan96   [07 May, 2025 at 04:48 PM]
@Slyspark: Plus the floodlight would be heavier if it was stainless steel body than aluminium @Oliver: The nut and bolt idea sounds a lot better although I'd grease it too to be on the safe side

If you do - go get stainless nut and bolt
Flurofan96   [20 May, 2025 at 10:42 PM]
@ash: That is what I will go for

A venue I worked at had these as cleaning lights, I had to re-wire them as 6 running off a 13a plug could get a bit warm over long periods of time!

Not sure about accessible switch indoors?, I don’t think this has even been used?, nice to find one though today, as something that was once so common is near on impossible to find now Cool
