Beta 5 mk12 fluorescent conversion installed Here I have converted a 2008 MK12 Thorn Beta 5 from SOX to 2x8w Fluorescent. I made a new gear tray and kept the SOX gear tray intact so it could be very easily converted back to SOX one day with little trouble. This replaces the 18w SOX Philips XWC that has become troublesome this last 8 months. It currently has a couple of well used 8w Sylvania tubes from the late 80s/early 90s as I didn't want to use any of my really old tubes. Of course I would never do this to an older Beta 5!

The triac for the light sensor kept fail Dan. I thought I had sorted it when I replaced the varistor which absorbs spikes from the ballast and it lasted 6 months before failing again. Also the 18w sox was on its way out and I only have one spare. They are too expensive now so I decided to retire it to the collection. 35w was brighter than needed so I did this, based on the tripple Beta 5s that were on the lake district car ferry in the 1980s.

Thats a shame like. I think i can safely use up another 2 or 3 lamps in mine before ill have to retire it for something else!

I do like SOX, the 18w was ideal. But I like fluorescent as well, given that this road was lit by fluorescents until 1985.

Thanks for the comments guys, other than having to reposition the supply connector slightly as it was being fouled slightly by one of the ballasts, it's worked out well! With the photo cell socket, and the socket for the spigot, it's surprising how little room there is to play with insde.

It was something like that Kev, we are going back 30 years now, they were mounted on squared off swan necks and were clear enough to see 3 x 8w tubes. I have been trying to find a picture but can't. All the pictures are on the current ferry that was built in 1990.

I got all the stuff together, but never got around to making an 80w PL-L geartray for an MA90 Smile

The 55W PL runs on SS would of been a good conversion with 2X55W
